The newest addition to our line-up of bottled beers is this amazing smoked beer from Brauerei Heller-Trum (better known as Aecht Schlenkerla). Made in Bamberg, Schlenkerla is one of the last German breweries to do its own malting. This Ur-bock is made entirely from their beech wood smoked malt, which is obvious immediately after your initial sniff. Heavy smoke aroma dominates, instantly bringing to mind images of smoked meats and mouthwatering BBQ. However, the first sips are not overpowering with this character at all. In fact, the lovely malt shines through bringing rich caramel tones, highlighted nicely with the smokey finish that lingers on the back of the palate. This beer just begs to be paired with BBQ ribs, smokey meats and cheeses, or a gorgeous steak fresh off the grill. I highly encourage you to give it a try next time you’re in. It’s more than just another good beer. It’s an experience you won’t forget.
6.6% ABV, 40 IBU

The second of the “artisanal collaboration” between New Belgium Brewing (Fort Collins, CO producers of Fat Tire amongst many others) and Elysian Brewing (Seattle, WA producers of the delicious Immortal IPA and The Wise ESB), Trip II is only available on draft in the Northwest and is proudly being featured here at the Blacksmith. The talents of these two fine breweries is evident from the first sip. Fermented with a Belgian yeast strain, which adds some light fruity character in the form of grapefruit and lemongrass, this light golden ale also features Magnum and Citra hops. Well balanced and highly quaffable at 6.5% ABV and 55 IBU. Come give it try!
New to the draught lineup this week is a hard apple cider from Wandering Aengus Ciderworks based in Salem, OR. This is their Semi-Dry Cider, featuring a fabulous balance of tartness, acidity, fruit and residual sugar, which really showcases the skill and passion of the makers. Wandering Aengus is committed to sustainable agriculture, local support and developing relationships with the farmers they buy their fruit from. This is artisanal cidermaking at its best. Great for sipping or paired with fish or pork. Don’t miss this summer delight!
